The coating system depends on where the frame stands, and the order of work on its stage: before erection, after assembly or in an operating building.

Which system the frame needs

Heated building: corrosion is slow; if fire protection is needed, the primer must be compatible with it.

Unheated workshop, canopy: daily temperature swings cause condensation — the steel gets wet even without rain.

Outdoors: the coating fades in the sun and is worn by sand, so a UV-resistant topcoat is needed.

Aggressive or humid environment: a thicker system with barrier coats, and for direct contact with acids and alkalis — chemical-resistant lining.

If the system is specified in the design, we follow it; if not, we propose one after an inspection. We apply all the main systems:

epoxy primer and polyurethane enamel;

zinc-rich epoxy primer, an epoxy intermediate coat and a UV-resistant acrylic polyurethane topcoat;

fast-drying urethane alkyd systems — for service conditions up to category C3 under ISO 12944.

New frame: before erection and after assembly

We remove mill scale by abrasive blasting: mill scale looks firm, but over time it comes off together with the paint. If the steel arrives primed, we check the primer’s brand, thickness and compatibility with the fire protection and the topcoats.

After assembly we touch up the site welds, where the primer burnt off during welding, the bolts and the spots where slings damaged the coating. Welds, corners and edges get a separate stripe coat before the main coat is sprayed: on a sharp edge the paint pulls back as it dries, and the film there is thinner.

Repainting an old frame

We start the inspection where water and dust collect: channels laid with the trough facing up, bearing joints, column bases, bolted connections. We also work in operating plants: where abrasive blasting is impossible, we prepare the surface by hand and use surface-tolerant primers suited to poorly prepared steel. We also do hydro-jetting.

Old coating that still adheres well can be overcoated with a compatible system, while flaking coating and rust are removed down to bare steel.

If corrosion has reduced the section, a structural engineer’s calculation is needed: paint protects steel but does not restore it.

A free trial area before the contract is signed will show how the new system takes to the old one.

Work at height and inspection

The tops of trusses and the joints under the roof are the easiest to leave under-painted: they cannot be seen from below and are hard to reach once the roof is on. There we work from our own JLG 1350SJP lifts and a Merlo telehandler, and where machinery cannot reach, certified industrial rope-access technicians go up. Our occupational health and safety system is certified to ISO 45001.

In the morning cold steel often “sweats”, so we start painting only when the steel temperature is above the dew point. We check the thickness of both the wet and the dry film, and the client receives the measurements at handover.

Special offer: 15% off orders from 500 m².

Send to contact@dqs.uz the KM or KMD drawings (steel design or shop drawings), and for an old frame — photos of the joints and column bases: we will estimate the painting area and the amount of surface preparation.
